Character Notes:
History: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robotics;Notes and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Robotics;Notes_episodes together tell enough.

Personality: Kai is a little bit of a weird character. On the outside, he presents a cold front - he could care less about what's going on around him, and he's just interested in his next round of KILL-BALLAD. (On at least one occasion, he completely ignores the situation around him because he's in a place with better wi-fi to play KB.) He's part of the Robotics Club mostly because Aki is. In short, Kai is a placeholder for someone useful. He's distant to basically everyone, and distrustful of those he doesn't know by default.

But when Aki's not around, Kaito can be much less reserved - he's a protector. He's made passion fruit buns a best-seller at Mizuka's shop almost singlehandedly because he needs information to keep Aki safe. He travels across Tanegashima collecting flags for the Kimijima Reports because he wants to help Airi and figure out what's going on. When Kona asks Kai to help root out cheaters in KB, he willingly stays up all night playing random matches because she doesn't have a way to force specific player matching. He will go to the ends of the earth and push himself past his limits for his friends.

All of this stems from Kai's relationship with Aki's older sister, Misaki. They were good friends until the incident on the Anemone, in which Aki and Kai developed Elephant-Mouse Syndrome, and Misaki ended up killing Kai Kimijima to protect everyone on the ship. After this, once Kimijima started to blackmail Misaki, Kai started to wonder why his relationship with Misaki soured, and he worked harder and harder to try and get back to where they were. And when Misaki asked him to take care of Aki as she left, Kai made it his duty to do so, at any cost.

Kai's dream is to become an astronaut, though he also has more than a passing interest in robots, though not nearly to the level of Aki or Misaki. Like virtually all children, he likes the Gunvarrel anime, and mains Gunvarrel itself in KB, to spectacular effect; it's natural, then, that he pilots the GunBuilds well, since they're basically Gunvarrel given physical form, and proudly shouts out Gunvarrel's signature attack once he gets to use it in the revised GunBuild-1 late in the series. He understands that Gunvarrel is important to Aki (and to Kona, once he meets her), and he's sensitive to what's going on. As the web of lies and confusion deepens, Kai is insistent on getting to the bottom of everything and figuring out what to do to help his important people.

First Person: (Video)

Okay, I'm starting to get pretty lost here. Something is going on here that's a little too big for me. I found this report that describes... well, the end of the world. Solar storms, a group that wants to reduce the human population by 80 percent, the Crash of 2015 being planned... it's heavy, but I want to find out the truth.

...I found this weird girl, too. I think she's an AI, but she's... too weird. It sounds like she knows this area, and she knows some weird other things, too, but I can only see her through IRUO., the AR viewer on my pad. I don't know if I can show you Airi since I'm recording from my pad, but...

[The camera turns; there's a girl in a black dress with white accents, barefoot, standing and looking at the sky.]

...Or maybe I can. Any thoughts, ducks?

Third Person:

Kai wasn't sure how he'd gotten into this mess. He'd been dragooned into Aki's latest project, and to make matters worse, she'd talked him into asking Fraukojiro for a way to pilot Tanegashima Machine 3 using the KILL-BALLAD controls. Not that he minded so much, all things considered - KB on a real scale sounded pretty good - but it was more... just that it seemed troublesome.

Then again, he'd wanted to ask Fraukojiro some questions, so he'd jumped at the the chance. But now that he'd gotten the answer... did he really want to do this? This would be something far and away different. The stakes were... a little larger than his average game of KB. He had to win this. No matter how dark things got.. and even if he had to use that. As much as he didn't want to use slow-mo, this was important enough that he needed to take every advantage available to him.

But then... where from here? If they won ROBO-ONE, they'd have to get GunBuild-1 fixed up and running. To keep up with whatever else showed up at the Expo. And if they didn't win... that was it. They were done. So he had to win. There was no other option. It would be breaking his promise to Misa-nee... and he wasn't willing to let that happen. Not if it took all the candy Aki had. Not if it took... well, a little more effort than he wanted to put in, under normal circumstances, but everything he could manage. In short, there was no way out except to come out on top. And then do it again at the Expo.

Kai sighed, pulling out his pad again and loading up KB while Aki was away. "This is going to be a pain..."
